New option for RPNsWith the present shortage of registered nurses in Ontario and a projected shortfall of 10,000 RNs by 2011, Centennial College in partnership with Ryerson University is preparing a new program to help registered practical nurses (RPNs) earn their Bachelor of Nursing degree in just three years. |

The academic pathway incorporates a new two-semester program, "Bridging to University Nursing" offered by Centennial, followed by Ryerson's degree-completion program. The collaborative model delivers curriculae that is consistent with the College of Nurses of Ontario's educational requirements for graduates to be eligible to write the RN registration exam.
There is a critical need to deliver a program for RPNs that acknowledges their existing education and prepares them for the expanded scope of practice, role change and successful post-diploma nursing baccalaureate education. Previously, RPNs interested in baccalaureate education had no option other than completing the entire four years of a BScN program -- a costly route for both the student and the province.
The learning outcomes for both the Bridging to University Nursing program and Ryerson's degree-completion program focus on assisting students to develop the critical thinking skills and competencies required of future practitioners. The University of Waterloo is investigating whether to create a branch campus in oil-rich Kuwait.
Kuwait is "quite serious" about exploring the idea, UW president David Johnston said.
While it's still in the early stages, UW is studying the feasibility of establishing a college of engineering campus there, said Johnston, who recently returned from Kuwait. Students would likely spend time at both the Kuwaiti and Waterloo campuses, he said. Kuwait's government would provide the land, but the campus would be financed as a private venture.
Johnston said UW's feasibility study will take two to three months. If it looks promising for all partners, the university would apply to a Ministry of Education panel, which would take another six months, he said.
